Getting into production
While mishing, I got a request to post some of the tracks I've put together, but be careful - the latest of the tracks posted here was done many moons ago...
The Duel of the Fates remix happened late one night when an online DJ streamed a previously remixed version of the song with a slow groove to it. I prefer quicker loops, so I sat down, took a two-bar drum solo from a TV theme I had sitting around (ask me if you want to know or can't guess which one), and chopped and styled it into six different backbeats, laying it behind the short version of John Williams' Duel of the Fates.
The set of tracks known as "Tha' Mix" is probably one of my most requested groupings of non-original composition. Originally a self-started project to familiarize myself with production equipment, there are ten tracks total, comprised of seven mixes, five of which were later re-edited for further exposition. These tracks were EDITED on digital devices (from mp3), rather than live-recorded from turntables.
Mix One was the original, and because of it, shows my n00bishness in the game. All I had wanted to do was cut two songs together (Black Rob "Whoa" and Big Tymerz "Get Your Roll On"). The rest of the songs just seemed to jump on the track. The gains on the recording equipment were set for a HUGE amount of bass, though - play this track softly, and adjust your volume accordingly.
Mix Two was the follow-up to the buzz that Mix One created, and features such favorites as "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems", R. Kelly feat. Nas "Did You Ever Think [remix]", and Outkast "Rosa Parks". Again, you have to be very careful of the bass, though - the beginning in particular had some issues with the EQ.
Mix Thhree was the first mixtape-type track I cut that was actually for use at a party. Most people were DJing these ghetto-fabulous college events with a laptop, Sonique MP3 software, and a pair of used car speakers... so i had to deliver some of the TLC "No Scrubs" along with Destiny's Child "Bug-A-Boo" and a couple of Mary J. Blige hits (by special request) to keep the ladies in the room. Fortunately, the time I spent at the Sound Forge (4.5) shows a bit better in this cut. So funkdafied.
Mix Four was all about two songs, and all I wanted to do was listen to them over and over again... Talib Kweli "The Blast" (for which I found a remix with Erykah Badu), and Erick Sermon feat. Marvin Gaye "Music". I finally got some new equipment, so the issues I had with severe treble in the cuts is finally gone, and the bass is more respecful.
Mix Five is probably my favorite track in the entire set... I looked at the list of songs I had put together for this set, and realized that I had a full relationship story. from a number of points of view... so I set about telling the stories of relationship from some differing points of view. I always thought that it would be amusing to make this one into a video. Featuring songs such as Tupac "Till the End of Time" and Joe feat. Mystikal "Stutter [remix]", this is one that you just might play more than once.
Mix Six is the club-anthem cut in this set. Starting with a high-powered cast of songs (Dru Hill "You Are Everything") and not finishing until we touch classics like Aaliyah feat. Timbaland "Are You That Somebody and Jay Z "Hey Papi", this mix is one for those really ready to work it on the dance floor.
Mix Seven was never officially finished (unfortunately), as my studio closed for a while as I refocused my efforts on music composition, but this remixed short features my absolute favorite introductory pair of songs, cut together in a fabulous whirlwind that just makes you HAVE to move. Also on this "sampler" are songs such as Janet Jackson "All For You" and Boyz II Men "Sympin".
I now do mostly editing work and producing masters for theatrical-type tracked productions, including full ambient layover and some foley work. It may be that this is my only legacy where putting out mixtape tracks are concerned, but if asked I'll still cut one or two by request.
I was working on a quick edit of some of the Don Davis/Juno Reactor music for the coming party, but it's unknown whether I will have the track finished by then, as other things have taken a large part of time that I would have dedicated to finishing this particular edit. If it does become completed, I will post it here.
As always, feel free to leave questions and comments!
